The Brian Kelly Award 2012

This prestigious annual award was established in 1996 by the British Carbon Group in memory of Brian Kelly, a leading authority on the physics of graphite to reward excellence in carbon science and technology.

The award is intended as a travel grant for students and early career researchers with up to ten years postdoctoral experience to attend the annual World Carbon Conference. Anyone living or working, at the time of that conference, in the country where the conference is held is not eligible. As a consequence, applications will not be accepted from the Poland on this occasion.

The award is made upon the basis of an appraisal of THREE documents: (1) the extended abstract or paper as submitted to the C2012 conference, (2) a short CV (with the date of the award of PhD if applicable) and (3) a commentary provided normally by the candidate’s supervisor or close colleague. Self-nomination is not permitted. The Award Committee of the British Carbon Group will determine the successful applicant.

The closing date for applications for C2012 will strictly be 4pm BST 20th April 2012. No submissions after this date will be accepted.

Previous applicants are welcome to re-apply.

The award is currently five hundred pounds sterling (£500) and is presented at the time of the conference with a certificate. It is a condition of the award that the winner attends the conference and presents his or her paper either orally or as a poster.

Applications may be transferred electronically to the Chairman of The British Carbon Group, Dr Gareth Neighbour, at gneighbour@brookes.ac.uk or, exceptionally, mailed to him at the following address:

Dr Gareth Neighbour,
Chairman, The British Carbon Group,
Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences,

2012 Award Open for nominations

GFEC Award 2012 (Groupe Français d’Etude des Carbones)

At the occasion of the 2009 edition of the World Conference on Carbon hosted by France, the French Carbon Group (GFEC) has created a new award to recognise a significant contribution to carbon science or carbon technology brought by a „young” scientist or engineer, regardless of his/her country of origin and citizenship, whose awarded work has been carried-out in a laboratory from a country whose official language is French, or by a citizen from a country whose official language is French and whose awarded work has been carried-out anywhere in the world. The laboratory may be academic and public, or from a Company and private. This prize is awarded every year at the occasion of the ongoing World Conference on Carbon.

The enforced conditions for eligibility is that (i) the remarkable results to be awarded should be presented at the forthcoming World Conference on Carbon, i.e., for 2012, the CARBON’12 conference in Cracow (Poland); (ii) the remarkable results to be awarded should be recent, i.e., disclosed not earlier than in 2010 or 2011, if already published; (iii) the recipient of the Award has to attend the CARBON conference and give the related lecture in person.

The award will be given by the current Chair of GFEC upon the recommendation of the GFEC Award Committee, at any appropriate time allocated by the Organising Committee of the ongoing CARBON Conference.

The GFEC award will include a one-time money prize of 1000 € (one thousand Euros).

Nominations are now sought for the award. The award is made upon the basis of an appraisal of TWO documents (pdf format preferred):

(1) An Abstract of at least 4 pages, so that the Committee can fairly assess the quality and originality of the work. It can be the Extended Abstract as it was or will be submitted to the CARBON conference in due time. It can also be the reprint of the related article if already published.

(2) A commentary provided by the „Nominator”, typically a close colleague, or the candidate’s supervisor if applicable. That the nominee is the main author of the work proposed should be clearly ascertained, as well as the reason why the nominee if fully eligible.

The nomination may come from anyone in the world, but should be made under the cover of any of the members of the GFEC Award Committee known by the Nominator, or directly sent to the current Chair of GFEC, Marc Monthioux  <marc.monthioux@cemes.fr>).

The closing date for nominations for the GFEC Award is now extended to March 9th, 2012, in order to better match the deadline agenda of the Carbon Conference.

Applicants will be informed of the selection by the GFEC Award Committee by March 31st, 2012.

ECA Award 2012 (The European Carbon Association)

In 2009, the European Carbon Association (ECA) has created a new award to recognise

a significant contribution to the European carbon science community carried-out by a
scientist from anywhere in the world, or a remarkable service to the worldwide carbon
community carried-out by a scientist from Europe. The ECA Award will be presented
at each World Conference on Carbon organized by one of the national carbon groups of
the ECA, that is to say, every three years.
The award will be made on the recommendation of the ECA Award Committee and
seeks to honour “Remarkable service to carbon science community” with the recipient
holding the respect of their colleagues and “having been influential and supportive
towards others in the pursuit of scientific excellence or have made a significant
contribution in providing a strong foundation to the community of carbon scientists and
technologists in order to promote a flourishing and healthy environment for scientific
achievement”.
The ECA award includes a prize of 1000 Euros.
Nominations are now sought for the award. The nomination should be made without
the knowledge of the potential recipient and include a citation of 200 to 250 words.
Nominations should be sent to the current Chair of ECA, Dr. Marc Monthioux
<marc.monthioux@cemes.fr>
The closing date for nominations for the ECA Award will be 15th April, 2012.
